Say hello to a new approach to the multimedia mobile device market with an offering that gives you the flexibility to work with a variety of partners, and create unique multimedia experiences for virtually any type of customer. The SmartScreensOS by Varia Mobile, is an extendable Linux platform for mobile devices.
Varia's technology provides immediate publishing, integration and deployment of Web 2.0 desktop services directly to mobile devices.
The SmartScreens solution is designed to allow rapid development of high-performance applications. The Linux-based SmartScreens edition includes application libraries that enable developers to quickly create deeply-integrated, rich applications.
The user interface uses familiar, industry-standard protocols, facilitating rapid development and integration into the core system. SmartScreens also uses standard web protocols to integrate with existing third-party online content services presented to the user in a rich, integrated UI.
Because new services are automatically integrated into the SmartScreens skinning engine, the services are tightly integrated into the device UI without requiring a significant development effort.
SmartScreensOS based solutions are, in essence, a set of end-to-end personal, media-focused applications containing all the features and flexibility of the SmartScreensOS software tailored for connected multimedia mobile experiences.
• What Can Varia Technology Do For You? •
When coupled with wireless connectivity, Varia's technologies enable wireless synchronization of content, such as DRM controlled music, directly from a back-end media service or storefront, without the user having to dock the device or sync it with a PC.
With SDL (Screen Description Language) and our client/server approach you can design the kinds of mobile devices and underlying support systems that make the most sense for your customers, giving them the world's first truly integrated mobile media experience.
Complete Portable Media Devices Using SmartScreensOS
Varia Mobile supports an ODM capability in order to provide a successful Portable Media Device experience from the electrical and mechanical design, through the overall user interface experience. Varia's platform offers a customized Linux distribution optimized for media playback, wireless connectivity and on-device rendering. At the core of this and related technologies is the utilization of SDL (Screen Descriptive Language), an XML-based language for specifying the layout and interface for small screen devices. Coupled with our Media Switch proxy and aggregation server, Varia is able to successfully render virtually any Web 2.0 service with a standard desktop interface and APIs over-the-air to our devices.
Varia's complete SmartScreensOS design allows for the best possible user experience since the media experience and functionality of online services can be integrated throughout the entire device providing consistent, simple and elegant designs.
SmartScreens Media Client represents the next generation of interactions for mobile devices. The IMC provides the full capabilities of SDL (Screen Description Language) on a variety of mobile operating systems. This allows a quick and easy method for integrating web services directly to popular mobile operating systems, with comprehensive interactions for multiple devices that can integrate with the core applications of the device.
During CES 2009, Varia has demonstrated this technology on Windows Mobile by presenting all services' menus available in our complete media solution, SmartScreensOS, on a popular phone. This is possible by employing common client/server architecture and web services' APIs for all devices and operating systems utilizing Varia's technology
Screen Description Language (SDL) is an XML-based language used specifically designed to render to mobile devices and interact with the Media Switch proxy and aggregation server. SDL provides a unique way to provide the overall richness of the user interface since new features and services may be completely modified or augmented automatically to all devices over the air.
SDL is more versatile means to enable rich personalized or branded user interface themes. This technology was originally shipped as part of the Curitel Identity phone in the form of the "SmartSkins" that were able to provide rich themes, content, and applications to smart phones. In the case of Rhapsody ibiza portable media players, users can generate their own themes for the player via a web based tool.
Varia Mobile's Media Switch is a critical server component to our technology solutions. By utilizing a client/server approach to interacting with Web 2.0 services, Varia is able to provide rich content and services formatted appropriately for the device, maintain the consistent quality of service and provide new functionality and services as they become available. The Media Switch aggregates content from multiple services and proxies high level information from each service. In this process, when a user is queries a web service, the Media Switch provides the interface; but when complex data (such as video or audio) is requested from the web service, the Media Switch authenticates the service but the client receives the content directly.
